The Ogun State Government is set to disburse ₦35 million in cash grants to over 500 women as part of activities marking the 2026 International Women’s Day, while also using the event to highlight women’s empowerment efforts and reaffirm political support for the current administration.
The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Adijat Adeleye, during the state’s IWD event held at the Royal Pavilion in Ijebu-Ode, which drew more than 5,000 participants. According to her, 50 women will receive ₦200,000 each, while another 500 beneficiaries will get ₦50,000 each as part of targeted support to improve women’s economic stability.
Beyond the financial support, the event also became a platform for political alignment, as various women’s groups openly declared their support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid and Governor Dapo Abiodun’s senatorial ambition for Ogun East.
Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele emphasised that women in the state remain committed to the Renewed Hope Agenda, describing it as inclusive and beneficial. She stated, “Policies of President Tinubu and Governor Dapo Abiodun-led administrations at the federal and state levels have significantly benefited women, with measurable gains in social inclusion, economic participation and access to opportunities.”
She also stressed the need for increased female representation in governance, expressing confidence that Nigeria would eventually produce a female governor to strengthen inclusion.
Adeleye noted that the 2026 celebration coincides with the 50th anniversary of Ogun State, describing it as “a reminder of women’s contributions to the state’s development across sectors.” She also acknowledged initiatives led by Oluremi Tinubu and Bamidele Abiodun for strengthening women’s empowerment.
Guest speaker Abiodun Olujimi described the theme, “Give to Gain,” as timely, calling for urgent action to address systemic barriers limiting women’s political participation.
