Over 15,000 farmers in Nasarawa State are set to benefit from the Presidential Food Systems Coordinating Unit, PFSCU programme aimed at boosting food production and tackling hunger across Nigeria.
Executive Secretary of the Board and Technical Assistant to the President on Agriculture in the Office of the Vice President, Ms. Marion Moon, announced this during the launch of the Harvest Hope Caravan and presentation of the National Agricultural Policy Mechanism held at the Government House, Lafia.
Ms. Moon explained that the PFSCU was created to engage stakeholders across the six geopolitical zones on priority interventions that will address food security challenges, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of unlocking Nigeria’s economic potential.
She noted that the unit has been working on a comprehensive policy framework designed to improve food security and reduce hunger nationwide.
Commending Nasarawa State for its reliable data collection efforts, Ms. Moon stated that it played a key role in the state being selected as one of the 13 pilot states for the programme.
Governor Abdullahi Sule, who received the PFSCU team, expressed optimism that the initiative would help farmers overcome various risks. He said, “The inclusion of Nasarawa is not by accident, considering our vast agricultural resources, including the state’s rice farm located in Jangwa, Awe Local Government Area.”
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Umar Tanko Tunga, highlighted that the launch of the Harvest Hope Caravan would boost productivity and support farmers in mitigating the impact of natural disasters and other agricultural challenges.
The event concluded with the official presentation of the Harvest Hope Caravan flag to Governor Sule, marking the formal start of the programme in the state.
