Abia Gov launches Techrise cohort 2, 850 youths begin digital skills training

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Chioma Otti, has restated his vision of building a digital-first state where young people become creators of technology and not just consumers. The Governor made this known during the opening ceremony of Techrise Cohort 2 held in Aba, which attracted 850 youths drawn from the 17 Local Government Areas of the state.

Represented by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzo Nwachukwu, the Governor explained that Abia Techrise is more than just an initiative or training programme. According to him, “it is the declaration of the government’s unwavering commitment to empowering our next generation and diversifying our state’s economy.” He said the project is a life-changing opportunity that equips youths with technical knowledge, problem-solving abilities, creativity, and the confidence to compete globally.

Recalling the outcome of the first edition, Dr Otti said that out of 510 participants, 19 best graduating trainees were offered automatic employment into the Abia State Civil Service. He assured the new participants that excellent performance will also be rewarded. While advising them to be disciplined and attentive, he encouraged them to embrace challenges as opportunities to learn.

The Chief Executive Officer of Learnfactory Nigeria and Convener of the Techrise Project, Engr Chibueze Ikedichukwu Ukaegbu, narrated how the programme was conceived. He urged the participants to build good character to sustain their skills. He further revealed that aside from technology training, the three-month programme will also provide entrepreneurial and leadership development. He called on the trainees to learn with full commitment as a way of showing gratitude to the government.

The Director General of the Abia State Orientation Agency, Lady Ure Abazie, praised Governor Otti for prioritizing youth empowerment. She advised the beneficiaries to be diligent, avoid social vices, and understand that the programme is designed to empower them so that they can empower others.

Some of the beneficiaries, including Mr David Akachukwu and Miss Chinyere Favour Chizaram, expressed joy for being selected. They thanked the Governor for giving them such a life-changing opportunity and pledged to emerge excellent in order to compete in the global technology industry.

The event was also attended by the Honourable Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mrs Magdalene Ugoanusi, Local Government Mayors, and other top government officials.
