The Renewed Hope National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme has launched a new pilot initiative called “Snacks for Thought” in Kano State, Nigeria, with key officials from the National Homegrown School Feeding Program, the National Social Investment Programs, and the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction in attendance. The PBAT FEEDS project aims to promote child nutrition and learning through nutritious snack distribution in public primary schools.

According to officials, the initiative began this week and is currently being implemented in selected schools including Magwan Science & Technical Model Primary School, Ganduje Nomadic Primary School in Dawakin Tofa, Kofar Nassarawa Special Primary School, Kofar Nassarawa Model Primary School, and Sumaila Special Primary School. The pilot phase was officially flagged off at Kofa Nasarawa Primary School.

Speaking at the event, Yakubu Kofarmata, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, described the initiative as a major step in tackling hunger and promoting education. “Today’s event marks another defining moment in our collective journey to build a nation where no child is too hungry to learn and no dream is cut short by the time of poverty,” he said.

The National Programme Manager of the National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme, Aderemi Adebowale, said the initiative would enhance learning and well-being among children. “Snacks for Thought initiative answers that question. It ensures that every child starts the day with a nutritious meal, focus, confidence, and freedom to dream about the future. This is what renewed hope looks like. At the federal level, we continue to feed the children,” he stated.

Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Kano State, Adamu Kibiya, added that the state government remains committed to improving education outcomes. “Today, we are not just launching a program. We are investing in the mental alertness, school attendance, and brighter future of our teaming children,” he said.

A representative of the programme described the initiative as “a crucial step towards improving pupils’ health and supporting inclusive education.” The government highlighted that this pilot would provide a model for sustainable school feeding systems in Nigeria, aligning with the Renewed Hope Agenda. The “Snacks for Thought” project also aims to empower local farmers and vendors by sourcing locally made nutritious snacks.
