The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has encouraged Corps Members to make the most of their service year for national growth and personal development. He gave the advice during his address to the 2025 Batch ‘C’ Corps Members at the NYSC orientation camps in Kano, Jigawa and Yobe States.

Nafiu stressed the need for them to prepare for life after service and adopt the core values of the Scheme, which promote discipline, responsibility and unity. He highlighted the importance of interaction among Corps Members from different cultures, urging them to build strong networks. According to him, “Make friends, be your brother’s keeper: interact with your colleagues from other States and cultures. You will need those contacts to advance your interests in politics, business, academics, marriages and other endeavours,” he said.

The DG further appealed to Corps Members planning to relocate abroad to complete their service year before travelling. He added, “For as many of you as possible, I enjoin you to stay on, let us build this country together and make it greater.”

He also reminded Corps Members to use social media responsibly. Nafiu advised them to avoid insults, stay away from political posts while in service, and respect societal values. He noted that responsible behaviour online reflects good character and promotes national harmony.

Speaking on economic opportunities, the DG encouraged participants to embrace the NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme. He urged them to take the post-camp training seriously, saying this could increase their chances of self-reliance. According to him, acquiring marketable skills and developing a business mindset will help them explore legitimate opportunities within their states of posting.

Presenting the Camp report, the NYSC Kano State Coordinator, Hajiya Halima Abubakar, said all the 1,554 registered Corps Members were well behaved and had adapted to the regimented camp environment. In Jigawa State, Coordinator Alhaji Dawut Jidda noted that 1,202 Corps Members had been actively participating in all camp activities.

From Yobe State, Coordinator Mr Ohuoha Edison reported that Corps Members were exposed to various trainings, including entrepreneurship development, aimed at equipping them for self-reliance after the service year.
