The Edo State Government has recorded a successful harvest at the Udomi Corn Farm, marking another milestone in its commitment to sustainable agriculture and food security under the Project SHINE Agenda.
Following the harvest, over 400 bags of maize have been secured in the newly constructed warehouse at the agricultural hub. The Ministry is targeting a total yield of 5,000 bags while ensuring proper storage and preservation of produce. This development underscores the state government’s focus not only on increased production but also on efficient post-harvest handling and value-chain management.
The Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Hon. Dr. Jerry Uwangue, explained that as harvesting progresses, replanting activities are simultaneously underway, reinforcing the government’s strategy for year-round farming without reliance on seasonal cycles.
“This approach ensures continuity in food production, a steady supply to the markets, and sustained engagement for farmers. We are deliberately moving away from seasonal farming to a system that guarantees consistent output throughout the year,” the Commissioner said.
He added that the Udomi Corn Farm is serving as a pilot model for the Ministry’s broader agricultural development plan, demonstrating the viability of continuous cultivation, efficient land use, and structured farm management across Edo State.
The Ministry further reaffirmed that similar farming practices will be replicated across other government-owned farmlands as land recovery, mechanization, and farm settlement initiatives progress across the state.
The Edo State Government reiterated its commitment to transforming the state into the Food Basket of the Nation, with a focus on food security, job creation, and sustainable agricultural growth for the benefit of all residents.
