FATE Foundation has announced that applications are now open for the AI Upskilling Programme for African Higher Educational Institutions. Delivered in partnership with the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) and supported by Google, this multi-country initiative is designed to strengthen advanced AI education across leading institutions in Africa.
The programme will equip lecturers and students with industry-aligned, future-ready AI skills using the Google DeepMind AI Research Foundation curriculum. Participating institutions will strengthen their teaching capacity, support students in building practical, real-world AI solutions, and actively contribute to Africa’s expanding AI ecosystem. The goal is to ensure that African universities are not only consumers of technology but also creators of globally relevant AI innovations.
By registering, institutions will gain access to world-class, localised AI curriculum resources tailored to the African context. They will also position themselves as leaders in AI innovation while contributing meaningfully to the continent’s digital transformation agenda.
Selected schools will benefit from instructor-led and self-paced AI learning modules, certification opportunities for trained lecturers, and structured AI curriculum frameworks that can be integrated into existing STEM programmes. Students will also gain hands-on experience in building AI solutions while developing entrepreneurial and problem-solving skills essential for today’s technology-driven economy.
The programme is open to accredited higher education institutions in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa that offer STEM programmes. Eligible institutions must be willing to integrate advanced AI curriculum into their existing courses and demonstrate faculty availability as well as technical readiness.
Lecturers, teaching assistants, and STEM students from participating institutions are eligible to take part. Interested institutions are required to complete the Expression of Interest (EOI) form. Early submission is strongly encouraged, as onboarding slots are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
