The Edo State Government has begun the development of a 100-megawatt power generating plant and a 300 metric tons per day liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility, a project expected to create new jobs, expand business opportunities, and support skills development across the state.

The project was officially flagged off during a groundbreaking ceremony at the Taihu Industrial Park in Ologbo, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area. State officials say the initiative will not only strengthen electricity supply but also open the door for new industries and economic activities to emerge in the state.

Governor Monday Okpebholo said the project represents a major opportunity for employment and economic growth, especially for communities around the industrial park.

“This project marks another important step toward industrial growth, energy security, and economic transformation in Edo State. We welcome this investment and the opportunities it will create for our people,” the governor said.

According to him, improved power supply will help businesses operate more efficiently and encourage investors to establish factories and production facilities within the state.

He added that the government remains committed to providing a stable and supportive environment that attracts investment and encourages private sector participation in infrastructure development.

Commissioner for Power, Hon. Paul Usenbor, explained that the power plant and LNG facility will significantly improve energy availability while also generating economic opportunities for residents.

He said the administration views reliable electricity as a key driver for industrial expansion, employment creation, and overall development.

“The 100MW power plant will significantly enhance electricity supply within the state and support growing industrial demand,” Usenbor said.

He added that the LNG facility, which will produce about 300 metric tons of liquefied natural gas per day, represents an important investment in cleaner energy and better gas utilisation.

According to him, the availability of more reliable power will make Edo State more attractive to manufacturers and other businesses that rely heavily on stable electricity supply.

Chairman of Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, Hon. Eric Osawaru, said the project will have direct economic benefits for the host community and surrounding areas.

“For the people of Ikpoba-Okha, this project will offer employment opportunities, skills development, infrastructure growth, and community empowerment,” he said.

Osawaru noted that partnerships between government, investors, and local communities can help unlock development and improve livelihoods.

The Managing Director of Taihu, represented by Mr. Jiang Fan, said the new facility will help provide consistent electricity for industries within the industrial park and nearby communities.

He explained that the project also follows the shutdown of the Ossiomo Power Plant and is expected to provide an improved and more reliable energy solution.

The facility is expected to be completed within six months and will support industries operating in the Taihu Benin Industrial Park.

Phase one of the industrial park project will cover about 29 hectares in Ologbo and is being developed by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).

A representative of the host community, Deacon Osazuwa, commended the state government for creating a favourable investment climate that encourages investors to bring projects into Edo.

He said choosing Ologbo for the project will help expand economic activities and create new opportunities for residents in the area.
