The Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC) has flagged off a comprehensive relief and reconstruction programme aimed at restoring livelihoods and rebuilding communities affected by the October 18, 2025 incident in Ilaje.

The intervention, which targets impacted residents in Obe-Nla, Obe-Adun and Obe-Jedo, marks a coordinated effort to move beyond immediate crisis response towards long-term recovery and development in the riverine areas.

Speaking at the official launch and distribution ceremony held at the OSOPADEC Area Office in Igbokoda, the Commission’s Executive Chairman, Prince Olabiyi Olaleye Poroye, described the initiative as a deliberate step to rebuild both lives and economic stability.

“We are not just responding to an incident; we are rebuilding lives and strengthening the future of our communities,” Poroye said.

He explained that the programme was designed following extensive consultations with affected residents, traditional rulers, youth groups and security agencies, including the Nigerian Navy. According to him, the collaborative approach ensured that the intervention reflects the actual needs of the communities.

Poroye also disclosed that the programme received formal approval from Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa in January 2026, reinforcing the state government’s commitment to transparency and accountability in addressing the crisis.

As part of the immediate relief component, OSOPADEC distributed food items, clothing, mattresses, chairs and other household essentials to displaced families, providing urgent support to those directly affected.

However, the Commission emphasised that the initiative extends beyond palliative measures, incorporating a structured economic recovery plan tailored to the realities of the oil-producing and fishing communities.

This includes the procurement of Yamaha outboard engines and the ongoing construction of fishing boats to help residents return to their primary sources of livelihood. The plan is aimed at restoring income-generating activities and reducing dependency on aid.

In the housing sector, Poroye revealed that more than 25 homes have been identified for renovation, while severely damaged buildings will be completely reconstructed. Construction materials have already been delivered to the affected areas, with work set to commence immediately.

Further reinforcing the recovery framework, OSOPADEC has finalised plans for the construction of a modern bakery to replace the one destroyed during the incident. The project is expected to create jobs and stimulate local economic activity, alongside the deployment of power-generating equipment to support small-scale enterprises.

Poroye noted that both relief distribution and reconstruction projects are being executed simultaneously to accelerate impact and ensure that affected residents experience tangible improvements without delay.

Chairman of the OSOPADEC Palliative Committee, Rev. Dr. Ola Judah, described the initiative as a structured and data-driven humanitarian response aligned with global best practices.

“Our approach is deliberate; to restore dignity, stimulate productivity and build long-term resilience,” Judah stated.

He explained that a verified beneficiary database was developed to ensure fairness in distribution and eliminate duplication. The committee also facilitated housing support initiatives, including the construction of 12-bedroom units and the rehabilitation of damaged structures.

Judah added that economic empowerment remains central to the programme, with targeted interventions such as fishing equipment distribution and enterprise support designed to promote self-reliance.

Also speaking, Chairman of Ilaje Local Government, Hon. Maurice Oripenaye, commended the initiative, describing it as a clear demonstration of governance that directly impacts communities at the grassroots.

Community representatives, including Prophet Ogo Obadiah Omosowone, expressed appreciation to the state government and OSOPADEC, noting that the intervention reflects genuine concern for the welfare of affected residents.

Permanent Secretary of OSOPADEC, Festus Adewale Omomowo, highlighted the broader significance of the programme, stating that it signals the beginning of sustained development efforts across the Commission’s mandate areas.
