The Ekiti State Government has released N259.45 million in running grants to 927 public primary schools to support daily operations, improve learning conditions, and strengthen basic education across the state.
The disbursement, carried out through the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), is designed to help schools handle essential needs such as minor maintenance, teaching materials, and other day-to-day requirements that directly affect pupils’ learning experience.
Speaking during the distribution of cheques in Ado-Ekiti, SUBEB Chairman, Prof. Femi Akinwumi, said the intervention is targeted at ensuring schools function more effectively without unnecessary delays.
He explained that the funds were allocated based on enrolment figures to ensure fairness across all benefiting schools. According to him, “These grants are aimed at ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of public primary schools.”
Akinwumi added that the move reflects the broader commitment of Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji’s administration to improving the foundation of education in the state. He stressed that better learning environments at the primary level would translate into improved academic outcomes over time.
He also issued a strong warning on accountability, urging school heads to use the funds strictly for approved purposes. “Every kobo must be utilised effectively to improve the learning environment and academic outcomes of pupils,” he said, while cautioning against mismanagement.
Also speaking, the SUBEB Commissioner for Human Resource Management, Dr. Olufunke Fajobi, commended teachers for their continued dedication, noting that their role remains central to achieving the state’s education goals. She highlighted ongoing efforts by the government, including training programmes and the promotion of over 5,000 teachers.
Permanent Secretary of SUBEB, Mr Michael Omolayo, called on school administrators and teachers to intensify efforts towards improving pupils’ performance, describing children as critical to the state’s future.
Headteachers at the event welcomed the grants, expressing confidence that the funds would help address pressing challenges and improve overall learning conditions in their schools.
