Canada has once again given fresh hope to skilled Nigerians planning to “japa”, as it announces its Express Entry system to target key professionals, especially teachers and healthcare workers.
In a post shared on X, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) confirmed that the country is now actively selecting candidates through specific job categories. This means your profession can now play a bigger role in your chances of moving to Canada.
The categories currently in focus include medical doctors, researchers, senior managers with Canadian experience, French-speaking workers, healthcare and social service professionals, tradespersons, educators, STEM professionals, and transport workers.
How Express Entry Works
Express Entry is Canada’s main system for selecting skilled workers for permanent residence. Applicants are ranked using a points system known as the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).
Points are awarded based on age, education, work experience, and language ability. Once your score is high enough, you may receive an Invitation to Apply for permanent residence.
What is different now is that Canada is no longer relying only on general draws. Instead, it conducts category-based draws, meaning people in high-demand fields like healthcare and education may be selected faster, even if their score is not the highest overall.
Who Can Apply
To qualify, applicants must have at least one year of skilled work experience, meet language requirements in English or French, and possess relevant educational qualifications.
Your job must also fall under recognised skilled categories. In most cases, recent work experience is important, as Canada now places more value on candidates who have worked within the last few years.
Documents to Prepare
Anyone serious about applying should begin gathering the required documents early. These include a valid international passport, language test results such as IELTS, an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA), proof of work experience, and a detailed CV.
Applicants will also need proof of funds to show they can support themselves upon arrival, as well as a police clearance certificate. Having a job offer is not compulsory, but it can significantly boost your chances.
What This Means for Nigerians
For many Nigerians, especially those in healthcare, teaching, and technology, this update presents a real opportunity. Canada is not just accepting immigrants randomly; it is selecting people based on labour shortages.
This means applicants who align with these categories have a stronger advantage in the system.
For those ready to take the step, it is important to understand the process and prepare properly.
