African Liberty opens applications for 2026/2027 writing fellowship

African Liberty, a platform that promotes civil discussions across the continent, has announced the opening of applications for its 2026–2027 writing fellowship.

The organisation disclosed this in a statement obtained by Nigeria Startup News on Sunday, noting that applications opened on March 1 and will close on April 30.

The fellowship is a paid 12-month programme designed to nurture emerging African writers and strengthen their ability to promote ideas around freedom, individual rights, and limited government.

According to the statement, the programme will run from July 2026 to July 2027 and will involve a structured writing development process. Selected fellows will work closely with experienced editors who will guide them through professional writing and publishing standards.

African Liberty stated that participants would receive a monthly stipend based on their performance as contributors during the fellowship. It added that fellows would also gain exposure opportunities, including features on television and radio platforms.

The organisation further explained that selected writers would have their works published in leading African newspapers, helping them reach a wider audience and build credibility in the media space.

To be eligible, applicants must either be currently enrolled in an African institution of higher learning or have graduated from one. Africans studying outside the continent are also eligible to apply.

African Liberty noted that the fellowship aims to identify young writers who are passionate about using their voices to influence public discourse and policy conversations across Africa.
