The Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Yusuf Tanko Sununu, has resigned his appointment to pursue a senatorial ambition in Kebbi State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Sununu confirmed his resignation in a brief response to our correspondent on Monday, stating that he stepped down in line with existing political guidelines for public office holders seeking elective positions.
“I have resigned,” he said.
The former lawmaker, who represented Yauri/Shanga/Ngaski Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, is said to be preparing to contest for the Kebbi South Senatorial District seat.
His resignation comes amid a broader directive by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu mandating political appointees interested in the 2027 elections to vacate their positions on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive, aimed at ensuring transparency and preventing conflict of interest, has triggered a wave of resignations among top government officials with political ambitions.
Sununu previously served as Minister of State for Education before he was redeployed to the Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction Ministry.
During his time in public service, he was associated with several social intervention and development initiatives, particularly in Kebbi State, where he has maintained a strong political base.
His next move is expected to focus on securing his party’s ticket ahead of the senatorial race.
