The Benue State Government has launched three flagship women empowerment and digital governance initiatives through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare (MWASW), aimed at strengthening social protection systems, improving case management for Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) and Violence Against Children (VAC), and expanding economic opportunities for women across the state.
The unveiling, which took place at Fr. Alia Hall, brought together key government officials, development partners, and women groups, signalling a major shift towards integrating technology with social welfare delivery. Central to the rollout is a digital case management portal designed to enhance reporting, tracking, and resolution of SGBV and VAC cases, particularly at the grassroots level.
Speaking during the presentation, the Ministry’s Data Management Officer, Comr. Paul Akunda, described the platform as “a critical tool that ensures no case is lost, ignored, or delayed,” noting that it creates a coordinated system linking social workers, law enforcement, and relevant agencies in real time. He added that “justice can now reach even the most remote communities through structured digital reporting.”
Alongside the protection-focused tools is the Women in Agriculture Empowerment scheme, which aims to support women with resources, training, and access to opportunities within the agricultural value chain. According to stakeholders at the event, the programme is positioned to improve livelihoods while addressing economic vulnerability among women.
Hon. Mrs. Theresa Odachi Ikwue, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, emphasised that the initiatives reflect the state government’s broader commitment to inclusive development. “This is about building systems that protect, empower, and uplift women in every part of Benue State,” she said, adding that “technology is now at the heart of how we respond to social challenges.”
The newly launched website, described as “taking MWASW to the Globe,” is expected to improve transparency, accessibility, and engagement with citizens and partners. Officials noted that it will serve as a central hub for information, reporting, and programme visibility.
Also speaking, representatives of the Benue Digital Infrastructure Company (BDIC), developers of the platforms, highlighted the innovation behind the solutions. Cephas Abur stated that the system is “designed to meet global standards while addressing local realities,” describing it as “a first-of-its-kind integrated social welfare digital ecosystem.”
The launch drew strong reactions from attendees, with many describing it as a defining step towards modernising social governance and deepening impact across communities.
