Thirty-six students have been recognised as top performers in Nigeria’s 23rd National Mathematics Competition, earning full scholarships and prizes after emerging from over 10,000 participants nationwide.
The awards were presented on Tuesday during a ceremony hosted by Nigerian Tulip International Colleges (NTIC) in collaboration with the National Mathematical Centre, bringing together students, parents and educators to celebrate academic excellence.
Speaking at the event, NTIC Managing Director, Fevzullah Bilgin, described the winners as exceptional talents selected through a highly competitive process that tested thousands of participants across the country.
“Today, we will celebrate 36 outstanding students—19 from the primary and junior categories receiving full scholarships, and 17 students will be awarded 100 per cent tuition scholarships,” he said.
The scholarships will cover the beneficiaries’ full secondary education across NTIC branches, alongside additional incentives such as performance-based cash prizes, positioning the students for advanced academic opportunities.
Bilgin noted that the journey to selection was rigorous, with only a small fraction of participants making it to the later stages of the competition.
“From a highly competitive pool of over 10,000 participants, only 83 pupils in the primary category and 16 students in the junior category advanced to the second round. This alone is a remarkable accomplishment,” he stated.
Beyond the winners, he acknowledged the efforts of all participants, stressing that the competition itself reflects a broader culture of dedication and intellectual growth among young learners.
“Regardless of today’s outcomes, each one of you is already a champion. Your commitment, resilience, and passion for mathematics are truly commendable,” Bilgin added.
The NTIC-ANMC scholarship programme currently supports about 100 students, with the institution committing over one billion naira annually to sustain the initiative and expand access to quality education.
According to Bilgin, beneficiaries are exposed to enriched academic pathways, including Olympiad training and international learning opportunities designed to prepare them for admission into leading universities around the world.
Among the top performers in the junior category, Samuel Famiroju from Spring of Life, Fountain of Life School, Enugu, emerged in first place, followed by Onwubiko Chimdiebube from Evergreen College, Enugu, while Mosebiuyeyi Adedeji from Phidel College, Lagos, secured third place.
In the primary category, Diamond Special School, Imo, stood out with a clean sweep, as Egejurum Onyedikachi claimed first place, Otitoh Chigozirim came second, and Agwuocha Ronald-Leo finished third.
The competition, which was conducted across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, continues to serve as a national platform for identifying and nurturing young mathematical talents.
