The Lagos State Government has begun enrolling young people from across the five IBILE divisions into its first Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme, aimed at equipping them with practical skills for employment and entrepreneurship.
The initiative, implemented through the Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment, brings together participants from Ikorodu, Badagry, Ikeja, Lagos Island, and Epe under a structured training system focused on real-world skills. The onboarding ceremony held at the Sam Shonibare Auditorium in Surulere signals a renewed push by the state to address youth unemployment through direct capacity building.
Designed as a hands-on programme, the TVET training covers a range of vocational areas including mixology, cosmetology, graphic design, phone and computer repair, as well as photography and video editing. The goal is to position participants for immediate job opportunities while also supporting those interested in launching small businesses.
Speaking at the event, the Honourable Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Hon. Akinyemi Bankole Ajigbotafe, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Lolade Aina, described the programme as a strategic response to unemployment.
“The TVET programme is a key part of this administration’s efforts to reduce unemployment and equip young people with relevant skills. With these skills, they can find jobs or even start their own businesses,” she said.
She further stressed that inclusivity remains central to the rollout, noting that participants were drawn from all IBILE divisions to ensure equal access.
“We are making sure that youths from all five IBILE divisions have access to this opportunity. This way, no community is left out as we work towards shared prosperity,” she added.
Participants are expected to undergo intensive training guided by experienced instructors using modern equipment, aligning their skills with current industry demands.
