Programme Overview

Grant Categories

Research Grant
The Research Grant supports senior faculty members to conduct independent research in any academic discipline at a recognised U.S. institution.
Duration ranges from a minimum of three months to a maximum of nine months. Applicants are advised to avoid November or December start dates due to logistical constraints.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must possess a doctorate or terminal degree at the time of application. Postdoctoral research immediately after completing a doctorate is not supported.
Preference will be given to candidates with at least three years of university teaching experience and a strong record of scholarly publications.
Programme and Curriculum Development Grant
This category is targeted at faculty members or university administrators seeking to design new courses, improve existing curricula, or develop academic programmes at their home institutions.
The duration ranges from three to five months within the same grant period.
Eligibility Requirements
A doctorate degree is not required for this category. However, applicants must hold at least a master’s degree or its equivalent.
This track is particularly suitable for professionals with limited access to current research, modern teaching tools, or global academic exposure.
Proposals must clearly demonstrate how the knowledge gained will contribute to strengthening academic programmes in Nigeria.
Project Statement Requirement
All applicants are required to submit a detailed project statement. Submissions shorter than one page will not be considered.

- Economic growth and trade
- Energy, science, and technology
- Cybersecurity and artificial intelligence
- Agriculture and food security
- Digital economy
- Infrastructure and advanced technology

Successful applicants will receive comprehensive support, including:

General Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Be Nigerian citizens or permanent residents with a valid passport
- Be in good health and able to complete the programme
- Demonstrate strong English proficiency
- Submit three letters of reference
Additional Information
The programme is open to all academic disciplines. However, clinical medical research involving direct patient contact is not eligible.
Applications for doctoral dissertation research, general professional travel, or immediate postdoctoral research are also not supported.
Preference is given to applicants who have not previously received a Fulbright Scholar award and who have limited experience in the United States.
Letters of invitation from U.S. institutions are encouraged but not mandatory. TOEFL is not required for this programme.
Previous applicants who were unsuccessful may reapply with improved proposals and updated documents.
