The Federal Government has announced that the application portal for the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme will officially open on April 13, 2026, for the new intake.
The initiative, under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Education (FME), is aimed at equipping Nigerians with practical skills that can improve employability, boost entrepreneurship and reduce unemployment across the country.
According to details released by the authorities, the TVET programme will offer hands-on training lasting between six months and one year, depending on the selected course. Successful applicants will also receive a monthly stipend of N22,500 to support their participation throughout the training period.
The government stated that training centres have been established across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), ensuring that applicants from different parts of the country can conveniently access the programme without relocation challenges.
Participants who complete the programme will be awarded a national certification, which is expected to enhance their chances in the labour market and support self-employment opportunities.
Who Should Apply
The Federal Government said the programme is open to Nigerians who are ready to learn practical skills and are committed to completing the training. Applicants are expected to be physically ready for hands-on activities and must be willing to attend training sessions regularly.
Officials emphasised that the programme is particularly suitable for young people seeking to acquire vocational skills, as well as individuals looking to transition into technical careers.
Training Areas
The TVET programme will cover a wide range of sectors considered critical to national development.
In the construction sector, trainees will be exposed to electrical installation, welding and fabrication, painting and decoration, floor cladding, tiling, interlocking, as well as bricklaying, blocklaying and concreting.
Under Information and Communication Technology (ICT), participants will learn network system installation, computer hardware and GSM repair and maintenance, as well as social media communications.
The automotive category includes motorcycle and tricycle repair, vulcanising and tyre repair, auto-body works, automobile mechanics, and automobile compressed natural gas (CNG) conversion and maintenance.
Other areas include creative media such as film production and broadcasting technical services, as well as immersive technologies.
Mechanical and technical courses will cover refrigeration and air-conditioning, plumbing and pipe-fitting, woodwork, carpentry and joinery, furniture making and upholstery, and solar photovoltaic (PV) installation and maintenance.
Agriculture-related training will include mechanised agriculture, agricultural machine operations, livestock farming, poultry, bee keeping and animal husbandry.
Service-based training will span fashion design and tailoring, industrial garment manufacturing, artisanal textile production, beauty therapy and cosmetology, tourism and travel, catering services, hospitality training, and leather works including shoemaking, bag-making and finishing.
Conditions and Requirements
The government stressed that the programme requires full attendance, warning that participation will be strictly monitored using biometric systems.
It added that the monthly stipend will only be paid to trainees who meet the attendance requirements.
Prospective applicants have also been advised to apply only if they are ready to commit fully to the programme, as irregular attendance may lead to disqualification.
In addition, all applicants will be required to provide their National Identification Number (NIN) and Bank Verification Number (BVN) during the application process.
How to Apply
Interested Nigerians are expected to submit their applications through the official portal at www.tvet.education.gov.ng once it opens on April 13, 2026.
The Federal Government urged eligible candidates to take advantage of the opportunity, describing the TVET programme as a key pathway to skills development and economic empowerment.
National Impact
The launch of the TVET April 2026 intake reflects the government’s broader strategy to strengthen technical education and reduce dependence on white-collar jobs.
With thousands of training slots expected to be available nationwide, the programme is positioned to play a significant role in addressing youth unemployment and supporting Nigeria’s growing demand for skilled labour.
Education stakeholders have also noted that sustained investment in TVET could help bridge the skills gap in critical sectors and drive long-term economic growth.
