The European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS has opened applications for its 2026 funded traineeship programme, offering young Nigerian graduates a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in international relations and diplomacy.

This paid internship, hosted within the Political, Press and Information (PPI) Section of the Delegation, is designed for candidates interested in understanding how the European Union represents its interests and values in Nigeria and across the ECOWAS region.

The traineeship will run for up to six months, with a tentative start date of July 2026.

About the Traineeship Programme

The traineeship will take place in the Political, Press and Information (PPI) Section, a key unit within the EU Delegation responsible for political engagement, analysis, and communication.

The PPI Section supports the Head of Delegation in maintaining relations with Nigerian authorities, Economic Community of West African States, civil society organisations, think tanks, and the media. It also monitors regional political developments and contributes to EU coordination with Member States on critical issues such as migration, security, and consular affairs.

Selected trainees will be actively involved in the daily work of the section, gaining exposure to high-level diplomatic processes and regional policy discussions.

Key Responsibilities

Successful applicants will support the PPI Section across a range of activities, including:

  • Drafting reports on political developments, human rights, economic trends, and foreign policy issues relevant to EU interests
  • Assisting in organising meetings and preparing minutes
  • Supporting communication and media-related activities
  • Contributing to public diplomacy events
  • Assisting in the preparation of official visits from the European External Action Service (EEAS) headquarters and other EU institutions

This role offers practical experience in policy analysis, diplomatic reporting, and stakeholder engagement.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the traineeship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be a Nigerian citizen
  • Must currently reside in Abuja, Nigeria
  • Must hold at least a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent qualification)
  • Must have less than one year of professional experience after graduation
  • Must not have completed more than six weeks of prior experience within EU institutions

It is important to note that internships, volunteer work, or student jobs carried out during or after university are not counted as professional experience.

Financial Support and Conditions

Selected trainees will receive a monthly grant to support living expenses during the programme.

However, applicants should note that all additional costs — including travel, visa, insurance, and accommodation — will be covered by the trainee.

The traineeship will be offered strictly in line with local Nigerian legislation, and candidates must be able to provide all required documentation upon selection.
