The First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has announced plans to launch the National Community Food Bank Project in Borno State later this month as part of ongoing efforts to address malnutrition and provide support for vulnerable populations across the country.

She made this known during the distribution of food items to vulnerable groups in Zamfara State under the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Social Investment Programme, held in Gusau, the state capital.

Represented at the event by the wife of the Vice President, Nana Kashim Shettima, the First Lady explained that the food bank project is designed to improve access to nutritious meals, particularly for children, while strengthening community-based support systems that enhance growth and overall well-being.

She noted that the initiative would not only address immediate nutritional needs but also reinforce local structures to better support child development and promote sustainable welfare outcomes in communities.

Senator Tinubu further disclosed that additional economic empowerment programmes would be introduced later in the year, targeting women, children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities nationwide.

She stated that the Food Outreach Scheme under the RHI, which was launched in March 2024, has continued to provide critical food assistance to persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups. According to her, the scheme currently supports two states every month through the donation of two truckloads of food items.

The First Lady added that the outreach programme has so far reached 24 states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), with Rivers State expected to be the next beneficiary.

She emphasised that the intervention aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which seeks to improve the welfare and living conditions of Nigerians irrespective of their social or economic status.

In her remarks, the wife of the Zamfara State Governor, Huriyya Dauda Lawal, described the initiative as a demonstration of compassion and a collective commitment to improving social welfare.

She commended the First Lady for sustaining the programme and expressed appreciation to Nana Kashim Shettima for representing her at the event, noting that the intervention continues to make a meaningful impact across communities.

Governor Dauda Lawal also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting vulnerable groups in collaboration with the Renewed Hope Initiative.

Beneficiaries of the programme expressed gratitude for the support, describing it as timely and helpful in easing economic pressures on their households.

The event, which drew participants from the 14 local government areas of the state, was attended by the Deputy Governor, Mani Malam Mummuni, wives of northern governors, and other dignitaries. More than 600 vulnerable persons are expected to benefit from the intervention.
