Flutterwave has announced plans to make Anambra State its operational hub for South-East Nigeria, in a move aimed at deepening fintech penetration in the region and expanding support for small businesses through digital payments, lending and technology infrastructure.
The announcement was made in Awka by Flutterwave Chief Executive Officer, Olugbenga Agboola, during a visit to Anambra alongside the Chief Executive Officer of Stanel Group, Dr Stanley Uzochukwu. The delegation was received by members of the state’s growing technology ecosystem, signalling what could become a major fintech expansion push into one of Nigeria’s most commercially active regions.
Agboola said the company intends to deploy significant infrastructure in the state, including payment systems, business support technology and point-of-sale terminals for merchants across Anambra.
According to him, the company’s recent banking licence approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria has positioned Flutterwave to broaden its offerings beyond payments into banking-enabled services that can accelerate business growth.
Expansion strategy targets SMEs and entrepreneurs
Agboola noted that Flutterwave’s South-East expansion will focus strongly on small and medium-sized enterprises, which form a major part of Anambra’s commercial base.
He said the company plans to make its payment tools widely available to both small traders and larger firms in the state, while also introducing lending access and financing opportunities that can help businesses scale faster.
“We want Anambra to be our hub for the entire South East of Nigeria,” Agboola said, adding that the company plans to establish operational systems, deploy infrastructure and strengthen merchant adoption across the state.
The fintech executive explained that Flutterwave is also designing a large-scale entrepreneurship impact programme specifically for Anambra, aimed at nurturing startups and enabling more founders in the region to build globally competitive businesses.
Fintech ecosystem boost for Anambra
The proposed hub is expected to strengthen Anambra’s position as an emerging technology and innovation centre in Nigeria, especially as the state continues to attract increasing interest from startups, investors and digital service providers.
For Flutterwave, the move represents a strategic regional expansion beyond Lagos and other established commercial centres, while giving the company stronger physical presence in the South-East market.
Agboola said that for the past decade, Flutterwave has served as a payments backbone for businesses across Africa, but the company now wants to create deeper local impact by directly empowering entrepreneurs in regions like Anambra.
He added that the planned partnership initiatives in the state will combine technology access, financing and lending support, with the broader goal of creating more successful business owners and scaling innovation-led enterprises from the South-East.
