The Edo State Government has intensified efforts to promote women-led enterprises as part of its strategy to strengthen inclusive economic development and expand opportunities for local businesses.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Business, Trade and Investment, Hon. Omoh Anabor, during a courtesy visit by the Edo State chapter of the League of Women Voters of Nigeria, led by its Chairperson, Barr. Anthonia Asagba.

Anabor said the state government, under the leadership of Governor Monday Okpebholo, is prioritising policies that encourage industrial development while creating an enabling environment for entrepreneurs, especially women, to thrive.

Industrial markets to support local enterprise

According to the commissioner, one of the administration’s major priorities is the establishment of industrial markets across the state to strengthen local production and provide structured business spaces for entrepreneurs.

He noted that these markets are expected to improve access to business infrastructure for small-scale producers, many of whom are women operating in manufacturing, trade, and value-added production.

Anabor added that the ministry is actively seeking partnerships with women-focused groups to ensure female entrepreneurs are integrated into the state’s wider economic development agenda.

‘Made in Edo’ products gain visibility

Highlighting ongoing efforts to promote women-owned businesses, Anabor referenced the recent Enugu International Trade Fair, where products branded under the “Made in Edo” initiative were displayed.

He said many of the showcased products were produced and packaged by women entrepreneurs, reflecting the increasing contribution of women-led businesses to Edo’s commercial landscape.

Support for MSMEs remains priority

Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs. Felicia Edokpolor, said the government remains committed to supporting women in micro, small and medium enterprises through targeted empowerment programmes.

She explained that these include providing access to trade fairs, product exhibition platforms, and training in packaging and marketing to help women-owned businesses meet competitive market standards.

Women voters group seeks stronger collaboration

Speaking on behalf of the League of Women Voters of Nigeria, Asagba said the visit was aimed at advocating greater female representation in leadership and expanding programmes that empower women economically.

She noted that women’s participation in governance and enterprise consistently delivers measurable social and economic benefits, adding that stronger institutional collaboration is needed to sustain progress.

The meeting reflects Edo State’s broader push to position women-led enterprises as a key pillar of its long-term economic growth strategy.
