The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has launched a new Innovation Space at its headquarters in Abuja, positioning it as a collaborative hub where National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and IT students can tackle real-world challenges, develop innovative ideas, and scale them into viable startups.

The initiative aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, particularly around job creation, youth empowerment, and digital inclusion, while reinforcing NITDA’s broader mandate to deepen Nigeria’s digital economy through talent development and enterprise support.

At the launch event, NITDA also unveiled two solutions developed under its Innovation Challenge 1.0 programme: the Smart ID and the COPA App. The Smart ID introduces a centralised, secure digital identity system that allows users to share personal and business information through NFC and QR code technologies, while the COPA App functions as an NYSC Information Management System designed to help organisations and the Scheme manage corps members’ activities more efficiently.

Speaking at the event, NITDA Director General Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi said the Innovation Space is designed to help young Nigerians take ownership of their careers in a rapidly changing job market, where traditional employment pathways are increasingly being disrupted by technology.

According to him, the agency is creating an ecosystem that allows corps members to transform their knowledge into practical solutions with real economic value.

“This is a platform where you can translate your ideas into impact. Before you finish NYSC, you can either build your business using NITDA to promote your product, or do something outstanding and join us,” he said.

Inuwa stressed that beyond technical skills, young Nigerians must learn to position themselves strategically in the labour market. “You need to promote yourself. Hard work doesn’t always get you to where you want to be. You need to be assertive to get what you want,” he added.

He disclosed that corps members serving at NITDA have already contributed significantly to the agency’s operations, including developing artificial intelligence agents that support its AI transformation plan. Some of these solutions, he noted, are already being deployed internally, with plans to scale them nationwide through collaboration with the NYSC.

The Innovation Space is expected to function as a makerspace for more than 700 corps members hosted annually by the agency, offering access to mentorship, training, and tools required to build and test digital products. It also serves as a pipeline for identifying top talent, with high-performing corps members potentially retained by the agency.

Also speaking at the event, Olakunle Nafiu, Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), described corps members as critical solution providers whose potential must be harnessed through structured mentorship and institutional support.

He commended NITDA for creating a platform that allows young Nigerians to demonstrate their ingenuity and apply their skills to national development challenges.

“The youths we have at the NYSC are solution providers, and I want to challenge ministries, departments and agencies, private entities and other establishments to tap into their wealth of experience and skills to create solutions for the larger society,” Nafiu said.

He added that the “idea2impact” initiative represents a practical pathway for corps members to transition from theoretical knowledge to real-world problem solving, noting that the NYSC has also prioritised digital transformation, including the digitisation of corps members’ identity cards and other operational processes.

During the event, teams of corps members pitched various technology-driven solutions addressing different sectors, with both NITDA and NYSC leadership endorsing several of the ideas for potential adoption within their respective organisations.

The ceremony also featured recognition awards for mentors who participated in the NITDA Innovation Challenge 1.0, acknowledging their role in guiding and nurturing emerging tech talent across the country.

NITDA said it is working closely with the NYSC to scale the Innovation Space model nationwide, with the goal of creating a distributed network of innovation hubs that can continuously produce solutions, startups, and skilled digital professionals.
