The Canadian government has announced fresh opportunities for skilled foreign workers under its Express Entry immigration system, with medical doctors, healthcare workers, educators, tradespersons and STEM professionals among the priority categories.
In a post shared on X on Tuesday, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) said Canada is actively seeking top international talent to support the country’s labour and economic needs.
According to the post, the priority categories include:
- Medical doctors, researchers and senior managers with Canadian work experience
- Workers with French-language proficiency
- Health care and social services professionals
- Tradespersons
- Educators
- Professionals in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) occupations
- Transport occupation professionals
IRCC said these categories provide “clear pathways to permanent residence for top international talent.”

Details on the official Express Entry page show that Canada continues to invite candidates throughout the year based on its Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), which ranks applicants according to factors such as age, education, language ability, work experience and adaptability.
The latest Express Entry round published by the Canadian government was for the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).
According to IRCC:
- Date and time of draw: May 11, 2026 at 11:06:08 UTC
- CRS score of lowest-ranked candidate invited: 798
- Number of invitations issued: 380
- Rank needed: 380 or above
- Tie-breaking rule: January 07, 2026 at 05:23:31 UTC
The government explained that if more than one candidate has the lowest CRS score, the cut-off is determined by the date and time they submitted their Express Entry profiles.
Canada’s Express Entry system manages applications for three major immigration programmes. These include:
- Federal Skilled Worker Program
- Federal Skilled Trades Program
- Canadian Experience Class
IRCC also explained that invitation rounds are conducted in different formats during the year.
The types of invitation rounds include:
- General rounds – for top-ranking candidates eligible under one of the three Express Entry programmes.
- Program-specific rounds – targeted at candidates under a specific programme such as the Provincial Nominee Program.
- Category-based rounds – designed to meet specific economic goals by selecting candidates from priority occupations or skills areas.
The Canadian government added that candidates with provincial or territorial nominations will continue to receive invitations through both general and PNP-specific rounds.
The development may attract interest from many skilled Nigerian professionals seeking permanent residence opportunities, especially those in healthcare, engineering, education, transportation and technology-related sectors.
