Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has approved the training of 74 artisans on Electric Vehicle (EV) prototype development as the state moves to prepare young people for opportunities in Nigeria’s growing green transportation sector.

The six-month training programme will be held at the Katsina Youth Craft Village in partnership with Maglush Electric Vehicle, an indigenous EV company owned by indigenes of the state.

The Coordinator of the Katsina Youth Craft Village disclosed this in a statement, describing the initiative as part of the state government’s wider plan to promote youth empowerment, innovation, and technical development.

According to the statement, the programme is designed to equip young artisans with practical skills in electric vehicle technology, including maintenance, repair, and prototype development.

The coordinator said the trainees would be selected from all 34 Local Government Areas of Katsina State to ensure that skilled EV technicians are available across different parts of the state.

“The programme is aimed at preparing young artisans for opportunities in the emerging green transportation sector while also building local technical capacity for electric vehicle maintenance and repair,” the statement said.

The initiative is also expected to support the Katsina State Government’s planned distribution of electric motorcycles to teachers by providing trained personnel that can handle technical servicing and maintenance.

Officials believe the programme could help reduce future dependence on external technicians as electric mobility adoption gradually expands in the state.

The partnership with Maglush Electric Vehicle will also include a technology transfer arrangement that would enable the Katsina Youth Craft Village to independently sustain future EV training programmes after the current batch.

The state government said the move forms part of broader efforts to position Katsina as a participant in Nigeria’s growing clean energy and electric mobility ecosystem.

Interest in electric vehicles has continued to rise across Nigeria in recent years as governments, startups, and private companies explore alternatives to petrol-powered transportation amid rising fuel costs and energy transition discussions.

Several Nigerian startups have already begun investing in electric motorcycles, charging systems, battery solutions, and clean mobility infrastructure, especially in urban transportation and logistics.

By focusing on technical training and local skill development, Katsina appears to be targeting long-term participation in the sector while creating employment opportunities for young people.

The coordinator described Governor Radda’s approval of the programme as a reflection of his administration’s commitment to innovation, youth development, and sustainable economic growth in Katsina State.
