The Economic Community of West African States has opened applications for a National ECOWAS Volunteer position for a Programme Assistant to support the ECOWAS Peace Fund Secretariat in Abuja.

The position is a National ECOWAS Volunteer role under the ECOWAS Volunteers Programme and has an expected start date of November 1, 2026. The initial contract will run for one year, with the possibility of renewal depending on budget availability and satisfactory performance.

The successful candidate will work with the ECOWAS Peace Fund Secretariat under the Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security. The role involves providing administrative, documentation and coordination support for Peace Fund-financed programmes.

The Programme Assistant will help with filing, record-keeping, archiving programme and financial documents, preparing correspondence and donor reports, and coordinating technical meetings. The officer will also assist with hybrid meetings, draft briefs and minutes, prepare visibility materials, support institutional social media and website content, and follow up correspondence between the Peace Fund Secretariat and other departments.

The role also involves preparing periodic status reports and supporting donor compliance reporting.

The ECOWAS Volunteers Programme brings young citizens into development activities while helping them build their capacities.

The Programme Assistant position comes with a monthly Basic Volunteer Allowance of $247.5, or its equivalent in local currency. Other allowances provided under the Conditions of Service of ECOWAS Volunteers will also be paid.

The position is based in Abuja and is a non-family national ECOWAS Volunteer role.

Requirements

Applicants must be Nigerian nationals aged not more than 35 years by the date of recruitment. Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in International Relations, Project Management, Business Administration, Social Sciences or a related field. At least three years of progressively responsible experience in programme or project administration, documentation, communications or visibility support is required. Applicants must have strong English skills and be able to work in a multicultural environment. French or Portuguese is an added advantage. Candidates should have report writing, records management, communication, analytical and Microsoft Office skills. Candidates should be immediately available, able to work under pressure and with little supervision. Previous ECOWAS experience is an advantage, while knowledge of volunteerism is an asset.
