The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has opened applications for its Internship Programme, offering students an opportunity to gain practical experience in trade, finance and development.

The programme is based in Cairo, Egypt, and placements may last up to six months. It aims to help interns understand the bank’s mandate, trade finance operations and role in supporting African trade, while allowing them to contribute ideas to its work.

Afreximbank says the programme is designed to build an understanding of African trade challenges and trade finance principles, particularly structured trade finance. The experience is intended to help participants apply their learning as they develop their careers and bring fresh perspectives to the bank’s operations.

Eligibility requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be aged between 20 and 32 in the year of application.
  • Be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate or postgraduate programme at a recognised institution during the internship year.
  • Be nationals of Afreximbank member states, students of African descent in the diaspora, or eligible non-African students whose vision aligns with the bank’s mission.
  • Have fluency in English or French and working knowledge of the other language. Knowledge of Arabic or Portuguese is an advantage.
  • Be studying a relevant field, such as economics, business administration, finance, accounting, social sciences, statistics, law, sciences, engineering or a related discipline.

Children of Afreximbank staff are not eligible. Selection is merit-based, and applicants should provide evidence of full-time enrolment. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee selection, as the bank seeks qualified candidates.

Benefits

Successful interns receive a monthly tax-free stipend of US$1,000. Those relocating from their home countries are eligible for a US$500 monthly housing allowance, bringing the stated monthly support to US$1,500. The bank also provides hotel accommodation for one week during induction, airport-to-hotel transfers on arrival and departure, a relevant residence visa where required, and medical insurance for the internship period.

The housing allowance is conditional on relocation from the applicant’s home country. Applicants should review the official vacancy details for additional conditions. The listing describes the opportunity as on-site in Cairo, so candidates should consider the location and relocation arrangements before applying.

Application deadline

Applications close on October 31, 2026. Interested candidates are advised to apply before the deadline and ensure all information supplied is accurate. Applicants should prepare academic and enrolment information before starting the form.

How to apply

Applicants should use only the official application page and avoid paying anyone who claims to guarantee selection.
