Applications are open for the Data Protection Leadership Fellowship, a professional programme designed to prepare Nigerians to help organisations manage privacy risks and protect people in an increasingly digital society. Applications close on October 31, 2026.

Data protection now reaches beyond routine compliance. Organisations face difficult questions involving children’s privacy, artificial intelligence (AI), digital identity, cybersecurity, financial inclusion, health information, workplace surveillance, online safety and responsible innovation.

However, many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) cannot afford experienced Data Protection Officers (DPOs). The fellowship seeks to address this gap by developing ethical, practical and people-centred professionals who can apply data protection principles to real situations.

What selected fellows receive

Successful applicants will receive full sponsorship for the IIM Certified Data Protection Officer (CDPO) training and certification examination. The programme also includes applied protection modules developed by TechSocietal, mentorship from experienced practitioners, practical case studies based on Nigerian and African contexts, and access to a growing community of practice.

Fellows will complete five applied modules examining how privacy principles work in practice. Topics include responding to privacy incidents, protecting vulnerable users, managing digital risks and navigating complex ethical decisions.

The fellowship aims to go beyond helping participants understand the law. It is designed to help them apply their knowledge when supporting organisations and safeguarding individuals’ rights and dignity.

Who should apply?

The opportunity is open to professionals and emerging practitioners who are interested in privacy, technology governance, cybersecurity, compliance or responsible innovation. The organisers particularly encourage women professionals, young professionals, recent graduates, lawyers, technology specialists, cybersecurity practitioners, compliance and governance professionals, risk professionals, data analysts, digital policy practitioners, civil society practitioners, researchers, and professionals supporting SMEs and startups.

Applicants should demonstrate curiosity, integrity, commitment to learning, professional excellence, willingness to support others and a strong interest in responsible technology. The programme is competitive and seeks future leaders who will use their skills to strengthen Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.

Fellowship commitments and opportunities

Because the fellowship is fully funded, selected participants must attend mandatory learning sessions, complete applied modules and assignments, sit for the sponsored IIM CDPO examination, and make a genuine effort to pass. They must also maintain professional and ethical standards throughout the programme. Failure to participate meaningfully or repeated non-engagement may lead to withdrawal of fellowship benefits.

After successful completion, graduates will be expected to join TechSocietal’s Data Protection Support Hub. The network connects certified professionals with SMEs needing affordable, practical data protection support. Fellows may gain opportunities to apply their learning, help organisations address everyday privacy challenges and contribute to appropriate escalation pathways for serious incidents.

The programme aims to leave graduates with more than a certificate: experience, connections and opportunities to support businesses locally.
