Residents and building owners across Anambra State are being called to action as the government officially announces the commencement of a new environmental initiative titled Operation Repaint Your Buildings (Ka Anambra Chakee). The directive, which aims to enhance the aesthetic appearance of communities, is spearheaded by the Anambra State Ministry of Environment.

In a public notice dated 17th June 2025 and issued from the Jerome Udoji Secretariat Complex, Awka, the Ministry made it clear that the operation targets dilapidated and unpainted structures across the state, especially those situated in areas visible to the public.

“Notice is hereby given to all residents and occupants of buildings which are in public view areas of the state with particular emphasis on Onitsha, Awka, Nkpor, Nnewi and Ekwulobia respectively, that general household inspection on dilapidated and unpainted structures defacing the environment shall commence with immediate effect,” the statement reads.

The goal of this campaign is to strengthen existing buildings, enhance visual appeal, and boost the eco-friendly environment of Anambra. These actions are in line with the Anambra State Environmental Management, Protection and Administration Law 2024, specifically under Part 4, section 79 (1-7). The law provides the legal support for the state’s beautification and aesthetic improvement efforts.

According to the Commissioner for Environment, Engr. Dr. Felix Odimegwu, the repainting exercise will start fully from 1st July 2025, with field officers visiting various locations. He emphasized that this move is not just a government project but a community responsibility. “A clean, beautiful and eco-friendly Anambra is possible if we join hands together to improve her aesthetic ambience,” he stated.

The Ministry has specified that residents and organizations must repaint buildings that have not been painted in the last ten years, or where existing paint is considered to deface the area. Both residential and commercial properties are included in the exercise.
