The Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has partnered with the Edo State Youth Parliament on a new empowerment initiative titled “From Fear to Fierce; Empowering the Girl Child.”
This partnership was solidified during a recent engagement session held at the Ministry’s office in Benin City. Representing the Commissioner, Chief Bisi Idaomi, the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Joy Ihensekhien, commended the Youth Parliament’s initiative and emphasized that it aligns with the Ministry’s core goals.
She expressed the Ministry’s dedication to encouraging girls to embrace leadership, understand their rights, and make well-informed decisions. “Women are increasingly taking centre stage and assuming leadership roles,” she noted, adding that this advancement reflects the Ministry’s strong commitment to uplifting the voices of women and girls across the state.
Speaking on the power of mentorship, Chief Idaomi added, “The leaders of tomorrow start today. So, when you catch them young at this age, they will do exploits and they will become wonderful in the future.”
The Deputy Speaker of the Youth Parliament, Hon. Ohangbon Lisa Ebuwa, praised the State Government’s efforts, especially in promoting girl child protection and fighting gender-based violence (GBV). She also explained the main goals of the new initiative.
“Our objective is to educate young girls about their rights, safety, and to raise awareness about GBV and early exploitation,” she said. Hon. Ohangbon called for full support and technical backing from the Ministry to help implement the initiative effectively.
The meeting had in attendance several key officials including the Director of Shared Services, Mrs. Juliet Ehigie; the Director of Rehabilitation, Mr. Okoeguale Sylvester; the Director of Women Affairs, Mrs. Florence Nwaozor; and the Director of Finance, Mrs. Mary A. Ikhaijagbe.
