The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), in partnership with the CISCO Networking Academy, has organized a hands-on training workshop for ICT and Computer Science lecturers from technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions across Nigeria’s South East and South South zones.
Held at the Imo Digital City in Owerri, Imo State, the workshop aimed at boosting digital skills, cybersecurity awareness, and networking knowledge among educators. The sessions, led by CISCO-certified professionals, focused on course delivery strategies, the latest trends in cybersecurity and networking, and various levels of CISCO certifications.
Participants were also trained on modern teaching methods using both instructor-led and self-paced approaches to support flexible learning in their institutions. This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s broader agenda to improve access to digital education, ICT infrastructure, and employment-focused technical training.
Engr. Dr. Ngozi Okelekwe, NBTE Zonal Director for the South East, underscored the importance of equipping lecturers with up-to-date knowledge. “Training like this ensures that our institutions remain globally competitive and responsive to the needs of the modern workplace,” she said.
Her South South counterpart, Mr. Cyril Mbong, added that the workshop is “a strategic intervention to deepen the integration of industry-recognized certifications into TVET curricula,” which is critical for empowering students with in-demand skills that match current market needs.
The training reflects NBTE’s effort to bridge the digital divide and support the digital economy through skilled manpower development. This aligns with high-value sectors like IT training, certification programs, and e-learning, which continue to attract attention from both public and private stakeholders.
In support of the initiative, the Honourable Commissioner for Digital Economy in Imo State reaffirmed the government’s commitment to driving digital empowerment. He noted that programs like this play a crucial role in building a future-ready workforce capable of thriving in today’s technology-driven world.
