The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has called for an increase in the insurance package and a more robust remuneration for Corps Members who will serve as ad hoc staff during elections across the country.
Speaking at the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, where he hosted the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, and members of his management team, Nafiu said the welfare of Corps Members should be enhanced, especially in view of the current economic situation.
“This is important considering the prevailing economic situation and the need for enhanced welfare for the Corps Members,” Nafiu stated.
He commended the positive impact of the long-standing partnership between NYSC and INEC, while stressing the need to review the Memorandum of Understanding between both agencies. According to him, the agreement has over the years defined the responsibilities of both parties, with Corps Members always willing to contribute to the democratic development of Nigeria.
“The Scheme will continue to support INEC in entrenching free, fair and credible elections in the country,” he added.
In his remarks, the INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, represented by the National Commissioner in charge of Electoral Operations, Dr Bala Bila, praised the contributions of successive batches of Corps Members to improvements in the conduct of elections nationwide.
Mahmood called for continued cooperation from the NYSC to help strengthen the credibility of elections in Nigeria, noting that the current Memorandum of Understanding between both bodies will be due for renewal in February 2025.
