The Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) on Thursday concluded another round of its Life Skills Economic Empowerment Programme (LEEP) at Ibeju-Lekki.
The four-week short-term training is part of the State Government’s efforts to strengthen grassroots empowerment and reduce poverty among residents.
The Honourable Commissioner for WAPA, Mrs. Bolaji Cecilia Dada, led the programme and highlighted the impact of the LEEP initiative, which has recently been taken to Agbowa-Ikosi, Alagbado, and Lagos Island.
She explained that the interventions are tailored to equip vulnerable residents with practical and income-generating skills to improve their livelihoods and promote economic self-reliance.
Mrs. Dada commended Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s dedication to women’s empowerment and community development, noting that continuous investment in skills training is a major driver of sustainable socio-economic growth in Lagos State.
She stated, “The State Government’s commitment to empowering women and supporting community-based initiatives is making a real difference in the lives of our people.”
The Commissioner recalled the recent graduation ceremony of over 5,000 students from WAPA Skills Acquisition Centres across the State, describing it as part of the administration’s holistic strategy to address unemployment and raise living standards. She assured that the Ministry would keep collaborating with communities, non-governmental organisations, and private stakeholders to ensure that empowerment programmes reach all parts of Lagos.
Addressing the 250 beneficiaries in Ibeju-Lekki, Mrs. Dada advised, “Do not despise the days of your early beginning,” encouraging them to take full advantage of the skills acquired to start and grow their businesses.
The Permanent Secretary of WAPA, Mrs. Rianat Ajibike Onigbanjo, also expressed appreciation to Governor Sanwo-Olu for his continued support to the Ministry.
She urged the beneficiaries to maximise the training opportunities to enhance their trade capabilities and improve their economic prospects.
Dignitaries present at the event included Directors from the Ministry and representatives of King Alakodo of Akodo, Prince Sulu Kabiru Abiodun, who showed support for the programme’s goal of boosting self-employment and sustainable income generation in the community.
