About 20 students of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, have received N300,000 each under the N1.2 billion OPay National Scholarship Initiative for Nigerian undergraduates. The disbursement was made possible through the Edo State government, facilitated by the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Opay Digital Services announced on Thursday that the initiative was introduced to reduce the financial burden on indigent students and to promote access to quality education. The scholarship scheme, launched earlier in 2025, covers students in 20 universities across the country, with a focus on undergraduates from low-income families. The programme aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 4, which emphasizes quality education, and will run for a period of 10 years.

Speaking on the development, Sally Suleiman, Special Adviser to Governor Monday Okpebholo on SDGs, described the initiative as a landmark move for the institution and the state. She explained that although the process took time, the eventual disbursement represented a fresh start for many students at AAU.

“This is more than just the announcement of a grant, it is a proof that our promises are being fulfilled. As we approach one year in office, this achievement stands as one of the milestones in our administration’s commitment to inclusive development,” she said.

She added that the effort demonstrated Edo State’s dedication to ensuring that students are not left out in the drive to provide equal access to education. Suleiman also commended OPay Digital Services for their role in creating opportunities for undergraduates, while praising Governor Okpebholo for his leadership and vision in supporting the youth.

One of the beneficiaries, a 100-level Human Anatomy student, Blessing Iyoha, expressed relief over the payment. “I am going to use it to pay my school fees and I won’t have to bother my parents too much this semester,” she said.

Another beneficiary, a 200-level Biochemistry student, Victory Eshere, said the scholarship would help her in different aspects of her education. She noted that the funds provided significant support for her academic journey.
