Abia State Information Commissioner, Okey Kanu, has announced that the newly passed Abia Start-Up Bill will serve as a catalyst for innovation and entrepreneurship in the state. He made this known on Monday at the Government House, Umuahia, while briefing journalists on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting.

Kanu explained that the bill was sponsored by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation and is designed to provide a structured framework that will strengthen the state’s efforts to build a vibrant economy. According to him, once Governor Alex Otti gives his assent, Abia will have a legal foundation to support technology-driven enterprises and young innovators.

“The bill seeks to create an enabling environment for start-ups and innovators to thrive,” Kanu said. “It aligns with the administration’s vision of making Abia a hub for technology-driven enterprises and sustainable economic growth.”

He added that once the bill becomes law, the state government would establish the Abia State Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship Board. The board will be responsible for coordinating activities that promote creativity, digital skills development, and start-up growth. A dedicated Abia Start-up Portal will also be launched to support emerging businesses and connect innovators with investors and mentorship opportunities.

Kanu further disclosed that the Abia Technology and Innovation Summit is scheduled to take place from December 10 to 12 at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia. The summit will focus on implementing the start-up law and feature a Start-up Innovation Challenge for graduates of the Abia TechRise Programme and other innovators across the state.

He also announced that Abia will host the 44th National Council of Civil Service Commissioners Conference from November 30 to December 5, with over 600 participants expected to attend.

On infrastructure, Kanu revealed that the Ministry of Works currently has 48 direct labour projects ongoing across the state, with five completed and five newly approved under the Zero Pothole Initiative. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to innovation, infrastructure renewal, and efficient service delivery for sustainable development.
