The African Union (AU), through its Department of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, has officially opened applications for the Innovating Education in Africa (IEA) 2026 programme. The initiative is a continental effort designed to identify, support, and scale transformative education solutions across Africa.

With a submission deadline set for 30 April 2026, the call targets innovators who are already implementing practical solutions that address critical gaps in Africa’s education and skills development systems.

About the IEA Programme

Launched in 2018, the IEA programme has grown into a recognised platform for promoting innovation in education across the continent. Over the years, it has engaged more than 1,500 stakeholders, supported 180 innovations, and mobilised up to $1 million in funding to scale impactful ideas.

For 2026, the programme expands its scope to include a stronger focus on digital transformation, artificial intelligence (AI), green skills, and technical and vocational education and training (TVET), aligning with major African Union strategies such as CESA 2026–2035, CTVET 2025–2034, and STISA-2034.

Focus Areas for 2026

The IEA 2026 call is structured around key thematic areas reflecting Africa’s current and future education needs.

Innovation in Basic and Secondary Education

Applicants are encouraged to submit solutions that improve foundational literacy and numeracy, enhance teacher professional development, and integrate AI-powered assessment tools. Inclusive and gender-responsive education technologies are also prioritised.

Higher Education and STI Ecosystems

The programme seeks innovations that strengthen research capacity, promote university-industry collaboration, and support digital universities and STEM centres. Platforms that enable research commercialisation and knowledge transfer are also welcomed.

TVET and Skills Development

There is strong emphasis on modernising TVET systems through digital integration, AI-enabled training models, and green skills development. Solutions that support apprenticeship systems and align skills with industry demand are particularly relevant.

AI, Robotics and Emerging Technologies

Innovations that incorporate robotics labs, AI-powered tools, and simulation-based learning systems are encouraged. The AU is also interested in projects addressing AI ethics, governance, and data privacy within education systems.

Who Can Apply

The call is open to citizens of African Union Member States who are leading organisations that meet the following conditions:

  • The organisation must be legally registered and operational in an AU country
  • The innovation must already be implemented with measurable results
  • Applicants must be directly responsible for the project, not intermediaries
  • The solution must demonstrate potential for scalability and integration into public education systems

Academics, research institutions, innovation hubs, and technology transfer offices are especially encouraged to apply under the higher education category.

Application Requirements

Applicants are required to submit their entries online in English or French. The submission must include:

  • A brief description of the problem being addressed
  • A detailed explanation of the innovation and how it works
  • Evidence of performance and measurable outcomes
  • Information on alignment with AU education and innovation strategies
  • Proof of business registration and operational licence

Only one submission is allowed per organisation, and previous IEA grant recipients are not eligible.

Selection Process

Applications will undergo a multi-stage evaluation process, including eligibility screening, technical review, virtual pitching, and final selection.

The assessment will be based on criteria such as innovation, scalability, measurable impact, industry relevance, and alignment with continental priorities, including digital transformation, green skills, and AI integration.

Benefits for Selected Innovators

Successful applicants will receive a range of benefits aimed at scaling their solutions and increasing their visibility:

  • Grants of up to $50,000
  • Recognition from the African Union
  • Inclusion in the Africa Education & Skills Innovations Handbook 2026
  • Capacity-building support from partner organisations
  • Opportunities to engage with policymakers and governments
  • Participation in the IEA 2026 Expo and policy dialogue sessions

Why This Matters

Africa continues to face significant challenges in education, including limited access, poor learning outcomes, outdated curricula, and a growing mismatch between skills and labour market demands. The IEA 2026 programme represents a strategic effort to address these issues by supporting locally developed, scalable innovations.

For Nigerian innovators and organisations working within the education and skills ecosystem, this call presents a valuable opportunity to gain continental recognition, secure funding, and contribute to shaping the future of education in Africa.

Interested applicants are advised to begin preparations early and submit their applications before the deadline.
