The Akwa Ibom State Government is set to deepen its partnership with the Cross River Basin Development Authority (CRBDA) as part of its major strategy to boost food security and agricultural development. This was revealed during a strategic meeting on Friday, June 20, 2025, at the Ministry of Agriculture’s Conference Room, Idongesit Nkanga Secretariat Complex, Uyo.
The Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Offiong Offor, while addressing the delegation, highlighted Governor Umo Eno’s focus on transforming agriculture in the State through productive collaborations and investment in food production. According to her, “Clearly outline your areas of interest so that the Ministry can foster more collaboration. We’ve supported River Basin Development sites in the State.”
Dr. Offor noted that the State is actively working with farmer cluster groups to enhance productivity across various agricultural value chains. She added that this collaboration aligns with the ARISE Agenda and the Renewed Hope Initiative aimed at ensuring both food sufficiency and economic expansion.
Representing the Managing Director of CRBDA, Chief Obonganwan Glory Ekpo, was the Executive Director of Planning & Design, Mr. Emmanuel Isong. He reiterated the federal agency’s commitment to supporting agricultural projects in both Akwa Ibom and Cross River States. Isong emphasized that CRBDA is determined to replicate the progress already achieved in Cross River in Akwa Ibom.
“The CRBDA is committed to agricultural input supply, irrigation, flood control, and rural infrastructure,” he said. “We are particularly focused on smallholder farmers and helping them access the tools and water resources they need to scale up.”
Highlighting some of the ongoing projects, Isong announced that two dams are under construction, one in Nkari, Ini Local Government Area, and the other in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area. These projects aim to support irrigation, boost output, and reduce reliance on rain-fed farming.
