The National Pension Commission (PenCom), through National Pension Week (NPW) 2026, is inviting eligible Nigerian students and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to enter the National Youth Pension Literacy Essay Competition, with prizes including cash awards, laptops, trophies and certificates.
Entrants must write on the topic, “My Dream for a Great Retirement Experience in Nigeria,” explaining how today’s choices, policies and innovations could improve retirement for future generations.
The competition has two categories. Category A is open to students enrolled in recognised secondary schools in Nigeria. Entries must not exceed 500 words, and the winner will receive ₦1 million, a laptop, trophy and certificate.
Category B is for students currently enrolled in recognised Nigerian tertiary institutions and serving NYSC members. Essays may contain up to 1,000 words. The winner will receive ₦1.5 million, a laptop, trophy and certificate.
Judges will assess entries for originality, understanding of pensions and retirement planning, relevance to the topic, research, critical thinking, practical recommendations, innovation and writing quality. The weighting differs between the two categories.
Entries opened on October 1, 2026, and close on October 20. Winners are scheduled to be announced on October 26, 2026. Late submissions will not be accepted.
Applicants may submit only one essay, which must be original work written for the competition. Plagiarism or misrepresentation of identity, school enrolment or NYSC status may lead to disqualification. Organisers may screen submissions for originality and ask shortlisted entrants to explain their work.
The competition rules also state that an essay must reflect the entrant’s own ideas and writing. Entrants must not submit work substantially generated or rewritten by a generative artificial intelligence (AI) system as their own. Any limited use of AI for research support or brainstorming should be disclosed, and authorship may be verified.
