Bauchi State Ministry of Education has restated the importance of the Inter-Secondary Schools Debate Competition in promoting peace, unity and development among students in both public and private schools.
The State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Lawal Mohammad Rimin-Zayam, made this known at the closing ceremony of the 2025 edition of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) Quiz Competition held at the Education Resource Centre, Bauchi.
Dr. Rimin-Zayam said extracurricular activities such as debates, quizzes and sports are essential to help students expand their intellectual capacities and complement classroom learning. He explained that the Bala Mohammed administration remains committed to revitalising the education sector and supporting initiatives that improve quality learning.
Speaking earlier, NILDS Director-General Professor Abubakar Olanrewaju Sulaiman, represented by the institute’s coordinator Dr. Hadiza Sa’idu, said the competition, which began in 2016, was expanded nationwide to strengthen the knowledge of young Nigerians in legislative processes, democracy and governance.
At the event, the Chairman of the Bauchi State House Committee on Education, Dr. Nasiru Ahmad Alah, announced Government Day Secondary School Bulkachuwa as the winner of the 10th edition of the NILDS Quiz Competition. Government Secondary School Gamawa emerged second while Government Girls Day Secondary School Dagauda secured the third position.
Several schools across Bauchi State also took part in the competition, including Government Day Secondary School Rimin-Zayam, Government Secondary School Ningi and Fariah Foundation School. The event highlighted the role of education, governance and civic awareness in preparing students for leadership.
