Bayero University Kano has joined the list of beneficiaries in the N1.2 billion Ten-Year Scholarship Programme launched by OPay Digital Services Limited. The development follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the institution and the fintech company, aimed at reducing financial barriers to education for young Nigerians.
The scholarship initiative, which began in November 2024, is structured to support 20 students annually across 20 tertiary institutions in Nigeria for a period of 10 years. With the inclusion of Bayero University Kano, OPay has now partnered with 18 institutions under the programme.
Vice Chancellor of Bayero University Kano, Professor Haruna Musa, expressed gratitude to the company for selecting the university as a beneficiary. He stated, “We are grateful that OPay has recognized Bayero University Kano as a beneficiary of this laudable scholarship scheme. On behalf of our students and management, I extend our profound appreciation. I assure you that under my leadership, we will continue to open our doors to more collaborations with OPay.
“On a personal note, I am proud to be an OPay account holder because your services are incomparable to any other bank in Nigeria. I encourage you to sustain this momentum, as OPay has become a household name in the country. To our students, I urge you to make effective use of this opportunity and also promote the services of OPay as a way of showing gratitude,” Prof. Musa added.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Corporate Social Responsibility Manager of OPay, Mr. Itoro Udo, highlighted the company’s commitment to sustainable social impact.
He said, “OPay is Nigeria’s foremost fintech with tens of millions of customers nationwide. Beyond financial services, we are passionate about social responsibility and committed to leaving a lasting impact on communities. With this scholarship, our vision is to support youths who are not just the leaders of tomorrow but already the leaders of today. BUK is our 18th partner institution, and we look forward to deepening this collaboration for greater impact.”
The Dean of Student Affairs at Bayero University Kano, Professor Shamsuddeen Umar, also praised the intervention, describing it as both timely and critical. He assured that the university would ensure transparency in the implementation of the scholarship scheme.
According to him, the management would strictly adhere to the provisions of the agreement to guarantee that deserving students benefit directly from the initiative.
The N1.2 billion Ten-Year OPay Scholarship Programme covers tuition fees annually for students across the selected tertiary institutions. The initiative is part of OPay’s broader social responsibility agenda to empower youths and strengthen education across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
