Are you passionate about promoting free, fair, and credible local government elections?
BBYDI is calling on committed volunteers to participate in its Election Observation Mission for the FCT Area Council Elections taking place on 21st February, 2026.

We are calling on committed and civic-minded individuals to join our Election Observation Mission for the 2026 FCT Area Council Elections. This is an opportunity to actively contribute to promoting free, fair, and credible local government elections while strengthening transparency, accountability, and peaceful participation across communities in the FCT which is set to hold on the 21st February, 2026. The mission is designed to encourage citizen involvement in democratic processes and to help ensure that elections at the local government level reflect the true will of the people.

As an accredited election observer organisation, we will deploy trained volunteers across Area Councils to observe electoral processes, document incidents, and support democratic integrity before, during, and after Election Day. Volunteers will be guided on standard election observation procedures, ethical conduct, and reporting methods to ensure that observations are accurate, objective, and useful for post-election assessments. Observers will play a vital role in strengthening public confidence in the electoral process by serving as neutral witnesses.

If you are passionate about good governance, committed to neutrality and non-partisanship, and willing to be part of a collective effort to safeguard our democracy, we encourage you to apply. Participation in this mission also offers an opportunity to gain hands-on civic experience, improve understanding of electoral systems, and contribute meaningfully to community development through democratic engagement.

Important Notice to All Applicants

Please note that the election observer role is a volunteer position and not a paid job. It is intended for active citizens who are willing to contribute to the integrity of the electoral process. The role requires dedication, responsibility, and adherence to ethical standards throughout the observation period.

However, to support communication during the assignment, an airtime reimbursement of a minimum of ₦5,000 will be provided. This support is meant to assist observers in submitting timely reports and staying in contact with coordinators during deployment.

Requirements

  • Must be a resident of any Area Council within the FCT.
  • Strong commitment to neutrality and non-partisanship.
  • Willingness to contribute to democratic accountability.
  • Must be available for pre-election briefing and Election Day deployment.

Application Deadline: 5th February, 2025

Selected observers will be assigned to observe the election at the polling unit closest to them within their ward; typically the same polling unit where they would ordinarily cast their vote. This approach helps ensure familiarity with the area and ease of deployment on Election Day.
