The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), together with the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS), has introduced the Non-Resident BVN (NRBVN) to help Nigerians living abroad access banking services easily.
This digital platform makes it possible for non-resident Nigerians to get their Bank Verification Number (BVN) without needing to visit Nigeria.
CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso explained that this move supports financial inclusion and encourages global economic integration. Through secure online identification and Know Your Customer (KYC) tools, Nigerians in the diaspora can now open bank accounts, send money home, and use other banking services with ease.
The NRBVN platform reduces the stress and cost of banking from overseas. It also gives banks in Nigeria a chance to create specific services for Nigerians living abroad. This is expected to improve formal remittance inflow and support the government’s goal of reaching $1 billion in monthly remittances.
The CBN also highlighted the importance of following FX Code rules to keep the foreign exchange market stable. By offering this digital solution, the NRBVN framework aims to connect Nigerians abroad more closely with the country’s financial system.
