The Centre for Information Technology and Development has launched a new initiative aimed at narrowing the gender digital divide and boosting economic opportunities for women across Northern Nigeria.

The project, titled Addressing the Gender Digital Divide and Expanding Business Opportunities for Women in Northern Nigeria (Agenda-WINNIG), is designed to equip women and girls with essential digital skills needed to participate effectively in today’s digital economy.

The launch was highlighted during a series of town hall meetings held across the three senatorial districts of Kano State on Monday. The sessions took place in Rano for Kano South, Bichi for Kano North, and Kano Municipal for Kano Central, drawing participation from community stakeholders, women groups, and young people.

Speaking during the engagements, the Project Officer, Ms. Fatima Babakura, said the initiative would run for 18 months and focus on Kano and Bauchi states.

She explained that the project is structured to address the persistent gap in digital access and skills between men and women in the region.

According to her, “The project is designed to reduce the gender digital divide by equipping women and girls with relevant digital skills.”

Babakura added that Agenda-WINNIG would not only provide training but also build partnerships to ensure sustainability beyond the project’s duration.

She noted that the programme would collaborate with key stakeholders to create long-term opportunities for women, enabling them to thrive in the digital space and improve their economic prospects.

The project will deliver tailored training programmes to meet the needs of different categories of participants. These include secondary school students, women who did not complete their secondary education, and those with higher education qualifications.

The initiative is expected to empower participants with practical knowledge in digital tools, online opportunities, and business development, thereby improving their chances of financial independence.

Stakeholders at the meetings commended the initiative, describing it as timely and critical to addressing gender inequality in access to digital resources and economic participation in Northern Nigeria.
