The Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA) has launched an “Adopt-a-School Campaign” alongside the inauguration of Sustainability and Green Border Ambassadors to drive climate action from the grassroots, with a strong focus on schools and border communities.
The initiative, unveiled in Idiroko, is designed to educate students and surrounding communities on environmental responsibility, while promoting practical actions such as tree planting, waste reduction, and sustainable living.
Speaking at the event, COWA National President, Mrs. Kikelomo Adeniyi, said the programme is aimed at shaping a new generation that understands the urgency of protecting the environment.
“We are not just planting trees today; we are planting responsibility and leadership in our children. Climate action begins in our schools, homes, and communities,” she said.
Adeniyi explained that the campaign’s theme, “Green Barracks, Green Borders: Advancing Environmental Stewardship for a Carbon-Responsible Future”, reflects a deliberate effort to instil environmental consciousness early, especially among young people.
She stressed that schools remain the most effective platforms for addressing climate challenges such as rising temperatures, flooding, and pollution, noting that early education can drive long-term behavioural change.
The programme also highlights the importance of small, consistent actions in tackling climate change. According to her, “One tree can absorb carbon dioxide, improve the air we breathe, and protect our environment. When multiplied across communities, these small actions make a big difference.”
Also speaking, the Acting Customs Area Controller of Ogun I Area Command, Deputy Comptroller Olukayode Afeni, described the initiative as timely, noting its alignment with broader environmental and security goals.
“A greener border environment is essential not only for our communities but also for achieving safe, secure, and prosperous borders,” Afeni said.
Activities at the launch included tree planting exercises, environmental education sessions, and the formal induction of student ambassadors tasked with promoting sustainability within their schools and communities.
