The Delta State Government has installed automatic cameras known as the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system, also called Plate Detect, to scan vehicle number plates and detect traffic offences across major roads in the state.
In a government announcement signed by Stella Macaulay, residents and motorists were informed that the technology has been deployed to strengthen traffic monitoring and improve compliance with road safety regulations.
According to the statement, the ANPR system works through strategically positioned cameras that automatically scan vehicle number plates and cross-check the information with a central database.
Authorities explained that the technology is capable of identifying several traffic offences including expired vehicle particulars, over-speeding, and running red lights.
“The ANPR system operates through strategically installed cameras capable of scanning vehicle number plates and automatically cross-checking them with a central database,” the government stated.
Once a traffic violation is detected, the system will automatically notify the vehicle owner using the phone number linked to the vehicle registration.
According to the government, “the system will notify offenders through phone calls and text messages sent to the registered phone number associated with the vehicle.”
The message will inform the vehicle owner of the specific offence and direct them to settle any outstanding fines through the official Delta State payment portal.
Authorities noted that offenders will be required to complete payments online via the government platform at paydelta.ng.
Officials described the initiative as part of ongoing efforts to modernise traffic enforcement and strengthen road safety monitoring across Delta State.
Motorists were warned that failure to clear outstanding fines could affect the renewal of vehicle particulars and may also result in the vehicle being impounded by relevant enforcement authorities.
The Directorate of Transport urged motorists to ensure their vehicle documents remain valid and to comply strictly with traffic rules on all roads in the state.
