The Governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has announced a new programme aimed at bringing home indigenes of the state who are currently engaged in menial jobs in other parts of the country. He said the initiative is meant to empower them and help them become self-reliant.
The Governor made this known during a church service held at the Government House Chapel in Abakaliki on July 20, 2025.
“We will bring back our people who are doing menial jobs in other cities and empower them, since they are not even being appreciated by the people they are working for,” Governor Nwifuru said.
“After all, they are being exploited without commensurate remuneration. We are currently building warehouses and skills acquisition centres in our industrial city as part of measures to engage our youths meaningfully.”
The plan is part of a broader youth empowerment strategy which includes establishing facilities in Ebonyi’s industrial city to create jobs and support small businesses.
This move aligns with the government’s focus on economic growth, investment opportunities, and entrepreneurship support.
Governor Nwifuru also addressed the performance of some of his appointees. He expressed concern over what he described as a lack of results from certain individuals tasked with implementing government plans.
“We are worried that the vision statement as contained in our people’s charter of needs has not been satisfactorily realized, which accounted for the minor reshuffle we did,” he said. “Our mission and vision are explicit, and that is why the people voted for us. However, we are still assessing them and we shall do the needful if the need arises.”
He said non-performers may lose their positions if they fail to improve during the grace period.
The Governor further urged Ebonyi leaders to ignore negative social media commentary and instead return to invest in the state.
He assured that the government is creating a business-friendly environment where industries and private investments can grow.
