Edo State is set to unveil a game-changing digital platform called Edo Business Connect, aimed at transforming how business is done within the state. The initiative was the focus of a high-level engagement session held in Benin City, where key stakeholders from Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), development partners, and the private sector gathered to prepare for its official launch.

The platform, which is expected to go live before August, will be the first of its kind in Nigeria. It will simplify business registration, increase visibility for small businesses, and offer direct access to government support and services. This is a major move to enhance the ease of doing business in Edo State and support both formal and informal entrepreneurs.

“Edo Business Connect is a testament to our dedication to digital transformation for inclusive development,” said Mr. Amen Odigie, Managing Director of the Edo State Investment Promotion Office (ESIPO), during his welcome address. “The support of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies is crucial to ensuring its success, as we work together to make Edo a hub for business innovation,” he added.

With high expectations, the initiative is being implemented in partnership with the Edo State Investment Promotion Office (ESIPO), the German development agency GIZ, and the Edo State Digital Governance and Data Management Agency (EDODiDA). The goal is to create a seamless digital ecosystem that supports entrepreneurship, boosts economic development, and encourages investment.

The platform will be hosted on the Edo State Government server and will serve as a digital gateway for businesses of all sizes. It features a digital business directory, real-time updates on government programmes, access to grants and loans, and a system for feedback and complaints. These tools are designed to support SMEs in Nigeria, particularly those looking to grow their operations without being held back by red tape.

Dr. (Mrs.) Ewe Rita Samuropa, Acting Managing Director of EDODiDA, explained how inclusive the platform is. “Edo Business Connect will offer a digital directory of businesses, access to loans and grants, and real-time updates on government initiatives,” she said. “It also includes a complaint and feedback system to ensure swift resolution of issues by relevant authorities.”

She also noted that the platform is accessible to everyone, whether literate, semi-literate, or illiterate. This inclusion ensures that even informal businesses operating in rural areas can benefit, making this a significant tool for digital empowerment and economic development.

“Through our partnership with the Edo State Government, we’re leveraging technology to create a more enabling environment for businesses,” said Mr. Osahon Okoh, Policy Advisor to GIZ. He stressed that the platform is specifically designed to eliminate the usual bureaucratic challenges that slow down business registration and growth. “Edo Business Connect will bridge the gap between government and the private sector, fostering greater collaboration and efficiency,” he added.

Mr. Okoh also pointed out the availability of toll-free support lines that will make it easier for business owners across the state to receive assistance and guidance.

Mr. Joel Edionwe, a Retired Permanent Secretary and current Coordinator of the Edo State One-Stop Investment Center, praised the effort. “This is about connecting the government with its people. It’s a platform that not only showcases what businesses do but also ensures their needs are heard and addressed,” he said.
