Edo State Universal Basic Education Board, in partnership with Universal Basic Education Commission, has commenced a teachers’ training programme aimed at improving how teachers deliver lessons in public basic schools across Edo State.

The Teachers Professional Development Training Programme, which was officially flagged off on March 2, 2026, is designed to strengthen classroom teaching, update educators on modern methods, and improve learning outcomes for pupils.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Hon. Ebanehita Sonia Omonzane, said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to raising standards in public schools. She noted that the focus is on equipping teachers with “modern pedagogical skills and innovative teaching methodologies that align with global best practices.”

According to her, better-trained teachers will directly translate to better-performing pupils. “When teachers are empowered with the right tools and knowledge, classroom effectiveness improves and learners’ performance rises,” she said.

Also speaking, the UBEC Edo State Coordinator, Mrs. Gloria Lawani, described the programme as a strategic intervention to support ongoing reforms in the basic education sector. She emphasised the importance of continuous professional development to keep teachers updated with evolving teaching techniques.

Other stakeholders present, including officials from the Ministry of Education, the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, the Nigeria Union of Teachers, and AOPSHON, pledged their support for the programme.

The training is expected to build teachers’ capacity across the state and reposition public basic schools in Edo for stronger academic performance and sustainable education reform.
