The Enugu State Government has disbursed grants to over 1,000 farmers and traders in Akpawfu, Nkanu East Local Government Area, in a move aimed at strengthening grassroots economic development and improving rural livelihoods.

The disbursement, facilitated by Governor Peter Mbah, took place at the Isiagu Akpawfu Field and attracted a large gathering of beneficiaries, community leaders, and residents, many of whom described the intervention as timely and impactful.

Beneficiaries who spoke during the event commended the state government for what they termed a practical demonstration of commitment to economic empowerment, particularly at the rural level where access to financial support is often limited.

Speaking with journalists, the traditional ruler of Isiagu Akpawfu, Igwe Tony Ikeokoye, expressed appreciation to the governor, noting that the gesture was both rare and significant in the history of the community.

“I’m highly elated by this gesture. It is not a right but a privilege. Governor Mbah has shown practical love to our people. We are grateful for this support extended to us,” he said.

He further noted that the intervention reflects a departure from past experiences where promises were made without execution, adding that ongoing projects in the area demonstrate a clear commitment to development.

“This is the first time we are witnessing a governor executing projects without making prior promises. In the past, there were promises that were not fulfilled. But now, we see projects already on ground. It reflects love, character, and a clear vision for a better Akpawfu,” Ikeokoye added.

The monarch also urged beneficiaries to utilise the grants judiciously to enhance their businesses and farming activities, thereby contributing to the broader economic growth of the state.

In his remarks, the programme coordinator in the community, Sunday Ibemdiri, described the initiative as historic and transformative, noting that such level of intervention had not been witnessed in the area before.

“What is happening here today is unprecedented. We have not witnessed anything like this in our community before,” he said.

Ibemdiri explained that the grant scheme forms part of wider development efforts by the state government, including the construction of the Akpawfu–Amagunze–Amode Road, completion of a smart school, and an ongoing farm estate project.

He confirmed that the beneficiaries, comprising mainly farmers and small-scale traders, turned out in large numbers to receive the grants.

“As you can see, over 1,000 people are benefiting from this initiative. That is the governor’s style, once he commits, he delivers,” he added.

Some beneficiaries also expressed appreciation, pledging to utilise the funds productively.

A former women leader of Isienu/Akpawfu Ward, Obiageli Okenwa, said the intervention had already begun to make a positive impact.

“We are satisfied with this grant and grateful to the governor for remembering us,” she said.

Similarly, Livinus Nnamani noted that the support would significantly improve his business operations, describing the intervention as timely and beneficial.
