June 16, 2025 – The Federal Fire Service (FFS) has announced a new nationwide mental health care program for its officers. The program, developed in partnership with Bright Future Community Healthcare Services, LLC, was formally introduced today at the National Headquarters in Abuja.
The initiative is designed to provide psychological support to fire service personnel, many of whom operate under intense stress and face traumatic situations. Speaking at the launch, Dr. Emmanuella Owobu, head of the implementing healthcare team, explained the urgency of the program.
“Our officers work in high-stress environments that put them at constant mental risk. Early intervention and consistent mental health support are key to ensuring they stay strong, both mentally and emotionally,” she said. She further noted that the full implementation phase of the mental health initiative would begin shortly.
Representing the Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Engr. Jaji Abdulganiyu O., MIFireE, MNSE, the Deputy Controller General in charge of Administration and Supply, Olumode Samuel, expressed strong support for the new initiative.
“This program is a step in the right direction to ensure that our officers are not only physically fit but also mentally resilient. Our commitment to their overall well-being is unwavering,” he stated.
The mental health initiative will include counseling services, awareness campaigns, and access to professional care. It is also expected to address cases of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which is common among firefighters.
The event was attended by heads of departments and units of the Service, reflecting strong internal backing.
